Asus must be determined not to let LG hog the market for affordable IPS monitors, as the Taiwanese manufacturer has just announced the upcoming release of the 22-inch VS229H and the 23-inch VS239H IPS displays.

IPS screen panels have several advantages over the TN technology often used in computer monitors. In particular, the screen's vertical viewing angles are much wider and colours remain consistent across the screen. Monitors with IPS screens were traditionally more expensive than those with TN screens, which is why it's particularly interesting to see LG and now Asus bring out some lower-cost models.

The VS229H and VS239H have exactly the same tech specs but slightly different sized screens. Both monitors boast Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels), a 14 ms response time (not so great for gamers, then) and a dynamic contrast ratio that apparently tops 50,000,000:1 ... hmmmm, we'll see about that! Connections include VGA, DVI and HDMI ports.

The VS229H has been announced with an RRP of €160 (approx. £140) while the VS239H will launch at €175 (approx. £155).
