Who is AOC?
Not too well known in France, AOC is in fact an Asian giant – the largest screen manufacturer according to them. In 2007, they produced a “mere” 45 million monitors and TVs under their name and especially for others such as LG or Philips. A new factory will soon open in Poland to increase production by another 11 million units.

After having mainly produced for others, AOC is determined to launch itself on the consumer market under its own brand. In the beginning, they fully realize that this will be done with similar and maybe unoriginal products but according to them this will change in 2008. A story to follow...

It’s the first AOC we have tested and to start with unfortunately a rather inconsistent screen. On the one hand, we have a monitor with nice finishing touches on the front.  And on the other, the base is made from truly entry level plastic (although it can be rotated and vertically adjusted).  Either way, the adjustment system is the least pleasant we have encountered: precision in rotation of the screen is approximate, isn’t smooth, and we doubted it could even turn; however if we insist it does finally work.  Vertical adjustment is via “jack” system which you have to pump.  It raises the screen but it’s a bit strange!

USB hub, webcam, vertically adjustable base, rotating joint...

A webcam has been added to the face of the screen in addition to a microphone.  This is a nice touch but once again quality is average as sharpness is mediocre and it’s better not to move.  Of course, it’s better than nothing.  Just for comparison, take a look at what classic webcams can do in our Product Face-offs section.

One very good thing is the screen’s 3 port USB hub.  We should add that not even a 2 port USB is always standard and so here there are no limitations.

For the rest, it’s a rather classic 22 inch but more in the lower half of the pack.  The 5 ms panel is noticeably less reactive than 2 ms screens and this can be seen with the eyes.  On the other hand, black is quite deep and energy consumption is very good (better than average) for a 22 inch.  Finally, default color rendering is frankly mediocre with an obvious blue dominance.  For those that purchase this screen, we hope the calibration profile we created (and that you can install) will correct colors.  On our test machine it produced perfect results!

-

Integrated webcam and USB hub

-

Vertically adjustable base

-

High level ergonomics (but finishing touches disappointing)

-

If you have a problem, can be exchanged for a new screen (for 3 years)

-

5 ms panel, we prefer faster

-

Blue dominance

-

Webcam has average sharpness

-

No zero dead pixel policy

-

Hard to adjust

This screen’s product sheet looks attractive, but unfortunately its colors were a bit disappointing. It’s too bad because with a little more care in manufacturing it could have received another star.
