Touch screen: was it really necessary?
Ahhhh, a touch screen! Faced with the success of touch screens in mobile phones and to a certain extent in computers, manufacturers have obviously decided to stick them everywhere. You have to admit that touch screens do have certain qualities: they’re designed to facilitate navigation through the menus by offering a nice, intuitive graphics interface. Navigation with the finger usually has a more playful element and (still) gives a little futuristic feel. In other words touch screens have plenty to make them attractive! All well and good. They still need to be simple to use.

This photo frame with a touch interface – is this a good idea on this sort of device? - isn’t unfortunately a good model to follow. In spite of a special coating, prints do appear on the panel.
The buttons, situated on the upper part of the frame, lack responsiveness, as does the touch screen moreover. As a result it isn’t the most comfortable of frames to use.
Happily, navigation of menus is simple and easy.

An 8" touch photo frame in a 4:3 format, with a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels, the PanTouch Clear is slim, which isn’t the case for all the competitors, has 1 GB of internal memory (standard with new frames) and supports audio (MP3) and video (AVI).

Very slim

This model is incontestably thin. Front on, the effect of the transparent glass frame, is really quite nice: the photo looks to be suspended in the middle of the frame. The PanTouch Clear has a double frame (one white, one black), which is a nice idea, except that dismounting it and installing it requires a bit of patience and quite some technique!

Overall it’s got a good finish. The base however is not as stable as it could be, which is a real black spot for a photo frame.

To put your photos into the frame’s ample memory, you can either use the USB port or one of the memory card slots (CompactFlash, SD, XD PictureCard, MemoryStick, MemoryStick Pro et MultiMedia Card).

A good idea that is becoming common for this category of product, you can program the frame on a timer to come on and go off, with different settings for the week and weekend.

Quality

The display quality isn’t bad at all on this model. It does use a TN panel with all the usual faults: front on it’s fine but from the side not so good and from above the screen is black. When the frame is placed vertically, viewing from the side is very difficult.

Photos are pretty well displayed, though the colours lack a little brightness. Contrast is well handled which is good.

In terms of audio and video, as usual these options are fine for accompanying a slideshow or if you want to watch a little holiday video but the sound and video quality don’t match up to what you get on a multimedia player.

-

Nice and thin

-

Photo display is good

-

Programmable on/off

-

1 GB internal memory

-

TN screen: reduced viewing angles

-

Colours lack brightness

-

Base is unstable

-

Touch screen is capricious

-

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on option / no battery

Although we like the look of the frame, it’s a shame that the touch interface tends to be a bit unreliable and the base lacks stability. Also, the display though nice quality suffers from the mediocrity of poor viewing angles.
