A backup screen for your computer
What use an extra little screen? To free your main screen from your favourite widgets (weather, RSS flows) for example, or your instant messaging or even your Photoshop tools palette. In other words, to gain space on the main screen. Unfortunately this only works in Windows XP, but it is very simple and effective. Once you’ve installed your little Samsung app and the screen is linked to the computer, a simple right click will activate the dual-screen mode (or triple if you want to go that far).

Guide the mouse to the top right corner of your main screen and move it to the right: you’ll see the mouse arrow reappear in the photo frame. Same thing at the bottom. The Samsung software makes it all very simple. And if you want to move apps onto the little screen you just have to drag and drop.

An elegant photo frame with a slim profile, this new Samsung model has an 8 inch screen and would benefit from increased brightness to display colours better. Equipped with 1GB of internal memory and able to serve as an extra computer screen, how do we rate this new model?

Elegant and nicely put together

The photo frame is also part of your decor. Most manufacturers have understood that now and are working hard to give a bit of caché to their frames, some succeeding better than others. The SPF-87H is both sobre and distinguished with its Crystal design. The frame has a nice slim discreet shape. The back of the device is incrusted with small flowers, that will please or not depending on taste. The finish is nice and the product seems well made with a stable base.

Delivered without a remote, you have to lean under the frame each time to reach the controls.

Powered via the USB, it comes without a battery, useful if you want to use it as a stand alone. To view your photos, you can either use the USB cable to transfer photos from your computer or slide an SD card (only format on offer which is a bit lightweight though it is now the most common format).

On this model the display levels can be set and the frame can be turned off, which is good for not using energy when no one’s home.

Good image

Although this frame looks quite distinguished, the screen itself is nothing to write home about. A TN, the viewing angles are narrow (inexistant from below, dark from above).

However, when you’re opposite the screen, the photos look good, the images nicely contrasted.
