Seagate Manager
Software comes with this external disk drive, but instead of coming on a CD or DVD, it is installed directly on the drive. When you first link it up to your PC, you'll be asked to install it. It is a thorough piece of software. You can use it to program synchronisation of files, data encryption and even set power supply parameters, such as for example turning itself off after 5 minutes of inactivity. Make sure you back it up on your computer before you format the drive!
Here’s the 500 GB version of the new Seagate FreeAgent Pro. Nothing has changed in terms of design. The casing is thin. It is parly in aluminium, with a band of plastic on the side. The metal part makes it more robust and serves as a heatsink. In terms of connectivity, there is only one USB 2.0 socket and no FireWire 400 or eSata.

The transfer rates are far behind the competition

With the 250 GB version, the tests didn’t go well. It was last in our product survey comparison. The 500 GB doesn’t fare any better. The speeds on medium-sized music type files are down on the 250 GB. It gives a read average of just 26.9 MB/s and 22.1 MB/s for write speeds, which is far behind the competition.

USB 2.0 (MB/s)

-

Elegant, understated design

-

Strong thin casing

-

Comes with good software

-

Access time: 22 ms

-

Read and write speeds are too slow

-

No FireWire200 or eSata

In terms of design, this is a great product. The casing is well thought out and robust. The speeds are however not good enough!
