Grabbing the cheapest satnav system you can get your hands on is often a false economy. It's all too easy to end up with an unresponsive system that drags its heels and slows you down. The worst offenders are slow all round and take too long to get a fix on the satellites, too long to find an address, too long to calculate a route and too long to update that route if you make a false turn.
At the other end of the spectrum, though, TomTom's Go x40 range are something of a revolution in the GPS world.
They include real-time traffic information for every single road in the country you subscribe to, thanks to a system that analyses the average number of mobile phones connecting to base stations in a given area.
It's a very clever system, and the bundled SIM card also uses GSM to download information about local petrol prices, the weather and other updates.
