Pricey network connectivity
The Epson EPL 6200 comes in a version with network connectivity (EPL-6200N). This is something that can come in handy within a small business or even at home. Shame though that that the N is twice the price of the L (the reviewed model). You can always share a printer via USB rather than going for the network option.
Speed and quality
The Epson EPL 6200L is very fast and holds it quoted print speed of 20 ppm. This applies to draft mode, be it text or graphics. Text, as always with laser, prints sharp and clean. Business graphics and charts come out well too, with little apparent banding. They are legible and crisp. The gradients come out well. At least that is the case when printing in standard mode. When switching to « draft » the results are less clean. The draft mode will clearly save on toner and should be used just to check that everything is in place before the printing out the final version.
Cost per page
We were pleased to see that the the EPL 6200L comes with a full toner with a 3,000-page capacity. (Brother only offers a starter version with 1,000 pages instead of 1,500 and Canon only 700). This accounts for the price difference, making the two other cheaper. However if you add the price of a 2,000 pages page toner on top of the Canon and Brother to reach the capacity offered straight away but the EPL 6200L, their price goes up immediately. What’s more, the EPL 6200L prints better, faster and for less!

Cartridge lifespan - ISO test for office
Cost per page is one of the lowest among entry-level laser printers. Canon is 50% more. The price of the consumables is important with this printer. Contrary to Canon, it has two components; a photoconductor drum and a toner cartridge. The photoconductor drum is rated at 20,000 pages, which means that you must add the price of this to the cost per page if you have to change it one day. Having said that, a service life of 20,000 pages is pretty good and you wouldn’t really expect to have to change the drum too soon!
-
cost per page one of the lowest
-
good speed
-
print quality
-
network connectivity is very expensive (only on N model)
-
not the best design
-
no driver for Linux (only Mac and Windows)
-
no wireless or Ethernet
-
colour lasers available at this price

Good speed, a full capacity toner, low cost per page and prints that are nothing short of superb: this mono workhorse has a lot going for it. If only the network connectivity didn’t raise the price so much!
