Aliasing : Deformation of the curves on objects showing an undesirable stair effect. Edges look sheared. This defect is caused by scaling circuitry which lacks calculation power in correctly resizing the image.

Banding : Phenomenon in the form of horizontal bands that are darker than the rest of the image. This defect is more visible on very light uniform backgrounds.
Clouding : Defect in the form of dark gray clouding on a black background.
Burn-in, image persistence: Some LCD and plasma TVs are subject to an image that is « burned » on the screen with a trace of previous images on subsequent ones. This can happen if we forget to turn off the television and the image is continuously displayed, for example, a channel logo in a corner or simply by pausing a movie for too long. This persistence is rarely permanent and will progressively disappear within 5 seconds to several days depending on the technology.
Scaling : now an obligatory processing if you own an HD screen which allows you to view DVDs which only have 576 lines (in PAL) while your television has 1080. This means calculating supplementary lines (1080 - 576 = 504 in our example), and it is this very complex operation which is given to the scaling circuitry. Entirely miniaturized, this circuitry or device is called a "scaler".
