Wireless is no novelty on Archos products but this version of the Archos 5 has a 3G connection for seamless web browsing anywhere.
Handling
Well done Archos for putting a black matt plastic casing (instead of the usual chrome) on the back panel. It may be less stylish, but at least you will not end up with a collection of fingerprints.
The right side of the device, which holds the 3G antenna has changed. On the side of the screen, it is slightly curvy, but in the back it is angular. The display, as on the Archos 7, has anti-glare screen protection. It’s quite strange that the manufacturer should continue the glossy screen on the classic Archos 5 (without 3G) as it is annoying to use outside.
The SIM card is placed on the top part of the player and is not that easy to get out. Well at least you won’t loose it !
On top of the normal functions that are those of a classic Archos 5, you will find -quite obviously- 3G!

The interface via French SFR.
3G
Connection to the network is simple and web-browsing with 3G is exactly the same as with wireless. It is impossible to switch from one to the other, which is just as well. At least, you wont go into costly 3G by mistake.
TV viewing (digital channels) is easy but the quality is not the best we have seen and you are always reminded that your are watching files that have been compressed.
Forget trying to watch tv underground, the network available down there is only 2G

TV channels
Of course not everyone needs Net and TV on the go, but one does get used to it rather quickly. Threre is little to hold against this version of the Archos 5. The interface is good, 3G works well and there is no mirror effect on the display. All this rightly earns it an extra star!
