One handy button
You won’t find a real button on top of a touch-screen on many sat navs. The Z201 has one that allows you to go back to the previous screen, which is very convenient. If you press the button any longer, it will switch on/off.
Traffic Assist Z 201 is the new addition to Becker’s satellite navigation systems.

The device is very similar to the previous offerings by the German manufacturer, the only real novelty is the 3D Terrain View and 3D Town View. A good selling point indeed, but one that on the whole does not prove that useful. Certainly not as much as the true-to-life signposting or the announcement of street names.

The 3D effect proves really useful only from specific angles allowing you to prepare for on-coming driving demands. It does however make the maps much prettier and motorway junction access easier. The picture on the packaging presents the ideal situation making the best of the 3D features. But this picture perfect Reality View presented itself only at a few occasions during our test.

Without any valid geographical position, the arrow stays grey.

The Z 201 boasts Text-to-Speech announcement of street names within the spoken navigation instructions, signs on European motorways and a 'Lane Assistant' that points the way on multi-lane roads and motorway exits.

Becker’s offering is user-friendly with crystal clear menus and swift route calculation times. When using predictive text, only letters that make up a valid address will appear, saving you time. Route calculation is excellent and we never had to wait more than 15 seconds to hear the first instructions pour in.

The letters that won’t make up a valid address remain in grey.

Good guidance

Both map and voice instructions are very good but prononciation of street names is slightly artificial. There is no speed camera warning. Apparently the reason for this is that such features are forbidden in Germany. Most of the time Becker offers a CD or an option in the menu that will allow to activate the alert for safety cameras. Strangely, none of the two were to be found here.

TMC traffic receiver for real-time traffic information is present on the standard version. Sadly there is no Bluetooth, therefore forget using the 201 like a hands-free car kit.

The Z 201 is not a bad sat nav, but not the greatest either. It is aimed at those who want something above an entry level device (42 European countries; 16/9 display, Text-to-Speech...and who are willing to give up speed camera warning) but are still reluctant to spend the vast amounts of money a high end model requires.
