What differentiates the Traffic Assist Pro 7929 from the Traffic Assist Pro 7916? Honestly, not much! This new version dons the « Ferrari » suffix raising our hopes, but finally only offers a few additional gadgets and accessories.

The clothes don’t make the man

The first difference with the 7916 is immediately noticeable: The red « Ferrari » casing with black letters that stand out. There is also a home charger that comes standard, in addition to what normally comes with the 7916 : a cigarette lighter adaptor, mount kit, TMC antenna, and USB cable. You may have noticed there are no headphones. The last difference is the addition of Ferrari dealer locations to the point of interest data base (POI), which isn’t an enormous bonus and really only appreciable to die hard fans of this brand.

It’s in the oldest pots that the best soups are made

For the rest, the Traffic Assist Pro 7929 Ferrari shares the same characteristics of its little brother. Amongst those, here are the main ones : very good satellite reception, a sober and clear interface, European maps, a USB port for access to JPEG photos and audio files on a USB key while driving, and vocal recognition of memorized addresses. We added a small video illustrating this last function, which is very practical, at least if we take the time to set it up.

Actually, having the new version of Traffic Assist in our hands, which uses the same software interface as its predecessors, allowed us to go further into tests and see some imperfections that most likely affect the entire Traffic Assist line. (Unfortunately, we didn’t have the former versions still on hand to verify this).

Using the search engine for cities using postcodes finally isn’t the most intuitive. Strangely, codes correspond to several adjacent cities. For example, when we typed 92140, which should have taken us to the town of Clamart, the Traffic Assist 7929 proposes by default Vanves, whose postcode is 92170. Clamart does appear in results, but you have to click on a button to see it in a reduced list of close areas.

We also noted, that some English words made it into the French translated version.

Finally, there were some buttons that were too small to read all of the contained text. They weren’t too intuitive and you either have to try and guess or systematically refer to the instructions each time.
