Films
There has been little progress in this area. Upscaling is still second-rate and blurriness is noticeable. Without a HDMI input, only a good software decoder will be able to do justice to your films. Using a DVI cable directly from a DVD player is more complicated, as you'll also need to do something about sound.
LG has just released the Flatron W2343T.  This 23'' Full HD screen includes a 5 ms TN panel and is powered by VGA and DVI inputs.  At the front, the bezel is glossy.

Like the rest of the current generation of LG monitors, this screen looks like Samsung's T series.  Underneath the screen itself is a glossy stand that only allows the screen to be tilted but offers no other movement.

Handling
The handling on the W2343T is no better than what's available on a 22'' monitor.  What's even worse is that the majority of these smaller screens have an HDMI port, which it doesn't.

Responsiveness
A response time of 5 ms isn't usually a sign of a great gaming career for a monitor.  Our tests didn't show up any particular problems, but it's a long way behind the best screens in this category.  Fast first-person shooter games might be too much for it, producing a blurry result when objects are moving quickly across the screen.  For simulation, strategy or arcade games, it will be perfectly adequate.  Likewise for office use or browsing the web.

The input lag is fewer than two frames on average, so it would be pretty cheeky to blame this monitor for your poor performance at the next LAN party.

Color handling
Although they're far from a disaster, the colours aren't entirely free of problems either.  Our grey test card demonstrates the problem perfectly: moving from one shade to the next, the dominant colours aren't the same, which makes it almost impossible to correct using the menus available on the monitor.  Its deltaE score, the average gap between the ideal colours and those shown on screen, is 3.3.  That's not a bad result, but not the best you can get either.

Choosing sRGB makes the colours more accurate, and the contrast ratio too shows signs of improvement.  We move from 700:1, just under the average, to 790:1, which is already a little more respectable.  The drawback is that this produces a fall in brightness of almost 100 cd/m², from 260 cd/m² to 160 cd/m².  For the first few seconds have it happens, it's very surprising, but the effect soon becomes less noticeable.  Changing this setting allowed the screen to gain an extra star in this section, moving from three to four stars.

Minuses

-

TN panel, so poor vertical viewing angles

-

Not many inputs, hard to customise

Its accurate colours might well bring this monitor a little more credit, enough perhaps to convince you. It will be fine for everyday use, providing you don't need it for gaming.
