ARM is currently the biggest names in behind the processors used in smartphones, and is even more dominant in the world of tablet computing. The firm's chips are also found in netbooks, and promise to be compatible with Windows 8.
Now, though, the manufacturer is hoping to see its products used in conventional laptops, putting them in direct competition with Intel, and, to a lesser extent, AMD.
The president of ARM Holdings held a press conference at the Computex trade show, and set out his company's ambitious plans. The company is hoping to be a serious rival to Intel in every segment of the market, offering chips for everything from mobile devices through to enterprise servers.
He's hoping that his company will have 50% market share in the mobile computing market—laptops and tablets included—by 2015, or within four years. The company can expect support from Nvidia, whose Tegra chips use ARM architecturer. One of our favourite tablets, the Acer Iconia Tab A500 uses a 1 GHz dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 chip.
ARM's current market share isn't too shabby, covering around 10% of the market in mid-2011. The company is already hoping to have reached 2015 by the end of the year though!
