ARM has recently announced new details of a new GPU architecture which promises to deliver impressive results for the next generation of smartphones.
The firm claims that its new Mali T604 architecture is not only more powerful but also more energy efficienct, and that it will be making its way into smartphones rolling off the production line in the next 18 to 24 months.
On paper, ARM's new GPUs are as powerful as those found in the current crop of games consoles like the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3, which first came to market in 2005 and 2006 respectively. Other new features include support for more powerful calculations and the Open Computing Language framework.
Alternatively, the Mali T604 can be paired with a quad-core processor. The PlayStation Vita, which will have a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 chip will be the first to use it. We're looking forward to seeing how the new hardware performs in upcoming smartphones and other devices.
