So here it is. The eighth major version of Apple's Mac operating system, Mac OS X Lion, is now available to download from the Mac App Store for £20.99. The update is, however, available free—on request—until 19 August for anyone who bought a new Mac between 6 June and 20 July 2011.

Mac OS X Lion

The Mac OS X Lion (4 GB) update is only available for certain Mac computers. To unleash the Lion, your Mac needs to be running Mac OS X 10.6.6 Snow Leopard, have an Intel Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2 GB of RAM.

The OS interface has been visually redesigned and is now similar to the touchscreen interfaces seen in Apple's iPhone and iPad. The update also brings a host of new functions (250 according to Apple) like Mission Control, for an at-a-glance view of what's on your computer and faster access to your various applications; the Launchpad platform for a quick and easy way to launch apps; Auto Save, which automatically saves your documents; and AirDrop for sharing files.
