Apple has just unveiled its new Mac mini. The good news is that it has been redesigned and given a make-over to make it more practical and its spec has been revisited. The bad news is that it's a good deal more pricey.

At £649 for the basic version it'll take a bit of a toll on the bank balance, especially when you know that it's on sale for $699 in the USA. At current rates $699 = £470. Apple give a pretty bad rate of exchange!

So what do you get for your money?

An Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.4 GHz, 2 GB memory, 320 GB hard drive, NVidia GeForce 320M graphics, an HDMI port, a mini Display Port and an SD card reader. No revolution here, except for the HDMI socket, which means you can envisage using the mini as a multimedia machine. The connectivity on the previous version was much more problematic.

The only real positive (relatively) is the size of the new mini - down to 19.7 x 19.7 x 3.6 cm, for 1.4 Kg. The same goes for energy consumption which is just 90 W in load and 10 W on standby, according to Apple. Finally, it has the unibody design, with an aluminium rather than plastic finish.
