This time it's official: Apple will launch the new iPhone on Tuesday 4 October.  All of the speculation will be over by this time next week.

The Wall Street Journal was the first to carry the news, which has now been confirmed in an official invitation to the press from Apple.  According to the invite, which simply reads 'let's talk iPhone', the iPhone 5 will be unveiled at an event in San Francisco on 4 October.

By Tuesday of next week we'll know a little bit more about Apple's latest handset, including whether or not an 8 Megapixel camera will be joined by the A5 processor found in the iPad 2, and whether or not NFC or other new technologies will be included.  We'll also find out if it will be thinner, lighter or even curvier than existing models ...

As well as the iPhone 5 (if that is what it's called), the event should also confirm or reject once and for all persistent rumours about other types of iPhone, including a potential iPhone 4S aimed at emerging markets.

We're expecting new iPods to arrive as well.
