Although Apple's iPhone 4S met with a rather mixed reception, pre-orders of the firm's latest handset have already gone through the roof!

iPhone 4S pre-orders UK networks

The news first came from American mobile network AT&T, which has reported very healthy pre-order sales of the iPhone 4S, with over 200,000 orders in just 12 hours!

Shortage of 16 GB Models

Over at Verizon, it seems that the 16 GB version of the iPhone 4S won't be available until 21 October, and it's the same story at Sprint too. Meanwhile, Apple has announced pre-orders of over a million handsets within the first 24 hours that the iPhone 4S was pre-released. The firm's shares also gained three points on the stock market.

In the UK, the iPhone 4S is available to pre-order from Vodafone, Orange, Three and T-Mobile ahead of the phone's release on Friday 14 October. Note that O2 also plans to carry the Apple iPhone 4S but isn't currently taking pre-orders.

While some people may have seemed rather disappointed that Apple's presentation event on Tuesday 4 October didn't culminate in the unveiling of an iPhone 5 (basically, an iPhone with a new design), consumers now seem to have come round to the idea of the 4S. However, the death of Steve Jobs, announced barely more than 24 hours after Apple's keynote, could well have boosted popularity of the iPhone 4S, which some are now dubbing the 'iPhone for Steve'.
