The Google OS continues to make ground on the US smartphone market and has now cornered a share of over 40%. In the manufacturer league, Samsung continues to make a strong showing.

The stats in the comScore study of the smartphone market on the other side of the Atlantic over the period from April to July 2011 are good news for Google. With a market share of  41.8%, a jump of 5.4 points in three months (36.4 % in April), Android is becoming the preference for increasing numbers of Americans.

OS

These figures are from a survey of 30,000 subscribers. The US smartphone market is also reported to be growing (+10%), with around 82.2 million phones in circulation.

The only other operating system to record an increase is, hardly surprisingly, iOS. Apple's OS is now at 27%, which is an increase of a point in spite of far fewer models running on it.

Microsoft's Windows Phone is down a point (6.7%) and Nokia's Symbian is also down (0.4 percentage points to 1.9 %). The RIM (Research in Motion) OS for BlackBerry, remains third in the classification with a share of 21.7%, but is on the slide (4 points down).

The manufacturer market

There's been hardly any change in the manufacturer classification over the same three month period. Samsung is on top and is 1 point up (25.5%), though this doesn't include the figures for the Samsung Galaxy S II, only recently available in the United States. The iPhone also continues its progress with a 9.5% market share (+ 1.2 points).
