A study conducted by Millenial Media shows that in 2011, Android could be set to become the preferred platform for application developers and publishers, leading many of them to turn their back on the iPhone.

Things are changing in the world of app developers, as application-makers are increasingly in demand! A survey of 500 app developers and publishers shows that in 2011, Apple's iOS could no longer be their platform of choice.

So while the App Store, with its 200,000 apps, is currently the place to be, developers are currently testing the water in other manufacturers' systems.

Top 3: Android, iPad, Windows Phone 7

While in 2010, 30% of developers said they were creating apps for Apple, compared with just 23% for Android, the Millenial Media study suggests that this trend could be turned on its head in 2011. Apple would see just 8% of developers working on apps, compared with 29% for Android! This would be a real slap in the face for the iPhone, if these analysts' predictions are true, and a real boost for Google's OS.

The study also suggests that more developers will be working for Windows Phone 7, a recently released OS which brings a breath of fresh air to the world of touchscreen smartphones. According to predictions, Microsoft's latest mobile OS could tempt 20% of developers into creating apps, with another 20% set to develop iPad apps.

Nokia's Symbian should also see a slight increase in interest, with 6% of developers creating apps for this platform.

If the predictions turn out to be correct, 2011 should therefore bring a more balanced choice of applications to manufacturers' online stores.
