Handsets running on the Goolge mobile OS are currently leading mobile sales in the US and have been for no less than six months, according to Nielsen. And with Android phones hitting the market left, right and centre, it's no real surprise.

In terms of ownership, RIM and its army of BlackBerry phones is still leading the way with a 31% market share, followed by the iPhone (28%) and then Android (19%) handsets. However, Google's OS is gaining ground fast.

In fact, the Google OS has come a long way from its 8% market share back in January. Over the last six months, 32% of users buying new mobiles in the US chose Android phones, compared with 26% picking a BlackBerry and 25% opting for Apple's iPhone.

With this marked jump in uptake and a whole load more Google-based phones slated for release before the end of the year, it wouldn't be surprising to see predictions made by research firms like Gartner finally come true. Could Android be set to become the world's number two mobile OS in 2012? Nothing is impossible.
