Google might be able to boast of more downloads from the Android Market, but Apple is making more money from the AppStore.

According to the latest investigation by research firm Ovum, over 18 billion apps will be downloaded this year alone to mobiles and smartphones.  With more and more Android devices around the world, logically enough Google's store is seeing more and more downloads.

At 8.1 billion annual downloads, Google is set to overtake Apple, which is only set to see six billion downloads this year.

It's clear that Google is selling more apps—and is only set to grow, according to Ovum's predictions—the AppStore still makes more money for Apple.  It brought in just over three billion dollars, compared to the $1.5 billion of sales recorded by Google last year—and is set to grow by more than 90% year-on-year.

With a total of 14.1 billion downloads between them, Google and Apple leave their rival platforms in the dust.
