Research by Flurry has shown that in the US, 58% of the revenue generated by portable games in 2011 is likely to come from Android and Apple mobile phones, compared with just 36% for the Nintendo DS and 6% for Sony's PSP.
Sales of games for smartphone OS have seen rapid growth in recent years, as the 19% stake of total turnover in 2009 has tripled today.
If mobile phone games continues to grow at the same rate, this sector will account for 80% of the total portable gaming market by the end of 2012.
Flurry also considers that the days of paying £25 to £40 for a physical game in a high-street store could be coming to an end. According to the firm's research, Mario is 'standing on a burning platform'.
