According to a survey carried out by Nielsen, in the course of the last three months (June to August) 56% of consumers who have bought a smartphone bought one running on Android.

While in August 43% of Americans owning a smartphone had one that was running on Android, 56% of those buying one in the last three months chose the Google OS. The plethora of phones now running on Android, at all price levels, is of course why so many consumers are now going for the Google platform.

Over the same period and still according to the same study, 28% went for the Apple iPhone. This is bad news for BlackBerry with its market share dropping from 18% to 9% in the same three months. Windows is also down 5% to 6%.

The arrival of the forthcoming smartphones running on WP7.5 (Mango) ought to boost market share for the updated Microsoft OS however.
