At the end of last week, AMD unveiled plans to restructure its workforce.  The announcement is bad news for some of its employees: 1400 of them are set to lose their jobs.

AMD currently employs just over 12000 people across the world, and making 1400 of them redundant means about 12% of them will be going.  Paying them all off is set to cost the firm $105 million, but will allow it to save $118m next year.

The company claims that these lay-offs will help it focus on its new targets: low-energy processors, emerging markets and cloud computing.

For comparison, figures show that Intel has 82500 staff (or did on 25/10/2010), while Nvidia employed just 6029 in 30/01/2011.  Back in 2008, AMD had as many as 16700 employees.
