With NVIDIA partying it up with its GeForce GTX 500s, AMD had to step back into the ring to get some attention back on its range of graphics cards.
The Radeon HD 6990 is a bi-GPU card with two 'HD 6950' type graphics chips. Even if no tech spec has yet been unveiled, we can expect it to give a similar level of performance to the Radeon HD 6950 in CrossFireX.
The Radeon HD 6990 will be in with a good shout of getting the highest-performance-card title on release. Users will however have to accept one or two compromises. Firstly, the fan which dissipates the heat given off by the two graphics chips is bound to be pretty noisy - thinking of the noise levels on the Radeon HD 6950, we can't see how the HD 6990 will be quiet.
Next comes the question of power consumption. A high-end power supply will be required so don't expect it to be economical. Lastly, looking at the connectors, you can see that the HDMI has been abandoned for a DVI and four mini-DPs. The Radeon HD 6990 is expected in March or April 2011.
