The new Acer smartphone was presented to the world in New York yesterday. The originality of this as yet unnamed phone is its big 4.8 inch screen (1024x480 pixels) in 21:9 format
.

A small tablet? A big smartphone? Acer has chosen the middle way between the two fashionable mobile formats, a way already opened by Dell with the Streak (5 inches) last summer. This new smartphone will run on Android, naturally.

For Acer, this high-end handset does possess something of the "tablet spirit". It will run on a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, have an 8 megapixel camera with LED flash, a second 2 megapixel camera on the front for videoconferencing. Connectivity is also impressive: 3G/3G+, Wi-Fi, it will also have an HDMI out and will support the DLNA standard for sharing content with other compatible devices.

We don't yet know what it will be called, or how much it will cost, but it should come onto the market at some point in April 2011.

As we mentioned last week, Acer is pursuing a growth strategy in the smartphone and tablet segments and aims to break into the top five smartphone producers by 2013.
