Although analysts are predicting tough times ahead for LCD monitor sales, Acer has announced three new displays for upcoming release in the key back-to-school sales period.

With these three new models, the Taiwanese manufacturer has made sure there's something for everyone.

The first new model, the S222HQL, will be an ultra-slim 22-inch (or 21.5-inch to be precise) monitor with LED backlighting. It has a 2 ms TN screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080p, as well as DVI and HDMI entries, all in a casing that's barely 1.3 cm thick. With spec like this, this display should theoretically be suitable for both office computing and games. There's no word on price yet, but we'll probably find out more in September, when the S222HQL is set to be officially unveiled at the IFA show in Berlin.

The G235H (23 inches) and G245H (24 inches) are designed to appeal to gamers. Both models advertise Full HD TN panels, 2 x 2 W speakers, as well as VGA, DVI and HDMI entries. The spec is nothing extraordinary, but one surprising feature is the announced response time of 5 ms, as it's really quite rare to see monitors designed for gamers with such un-responsive TN panels. However, this is definitely the response time quoted on the manufacturers' website.

We called Acer to check that this wasn't some kind of error, and to find out why the firm had opted for such a low response time. Unfortunately, as we're in the depths of the summer holiday season, no-one has got back to us yet. We'll let you know as soon as we find out more.
