8 years of photos down the drain

A friend recently told me she'd lost 8 years of digital photos, not saved or backed up, following a hard drive crash. We'll never say this enough: back up your data!
The most paranoid, and there are one or two of them in editorial, even operate on a system of multiple back-ups which they keep in different places in case of fire, lightning or tsunami.
Without going to those lengths, even if they aren't wrong, the strict minimum is to regularly back up your documents, photos and videos, at least on an external hard drive. We regularly publish external hard drive reviews (also worth checking out the multimedia drives (media centres) which are very practical for viewing your photos and videos straight on your TV, without going via the computer), which are especially useful if you're looking for rapid drives. Otherwise, if you're just looking for an occasional storage device, you can go for the cheapest out there. Here are a couple for you to have a look at:
