With 3D TV sales results starting to filter through, we're beginning to get a picture of the impact of the technology on the TV market. GfK figures show that 25,000 3D TVs were sold in Europe in May, the first full month of sales. While this represents only around 1% of total TV sales the segment is set to grow significantly over the course of 2010 and beyond.
Samsung was faster off the mark than Sony in getting its 3D TVs onto the market but with the Sony distribution dates very much geared to the World Cup, we're waiting for the June/July figures to see which of the two has opened its 3D account with most success.
While sales projections from the manufacturers indicate a massive take-up of the technology (Sony forecasts between 6% and 8% of total TV sales by early 2011), there have been mixed reports as to consumers' initial enthusiasm given the lack of 3D content currently available and the cost of the technology.
We can only hope that the price of glasses falls soon - they are still far too expensive. Setting up the whole family, and a few friends, will ruin you at current prices.
